Water Damage in Springfield: Two Creeks and a Lot of Older Plumbing
Springfield sits between two watersheds. Accotink Creek runs through the middle, held back at Lake Accotink, which Fairfax County says the Army built in 1940 as a water supply. Pohick Creek drains the south and west, and the County built six lakes in that watershed between 1970 and 1985 to help prevent flooding.
The creeks still rise. On April 16, 2018, Patch reported that stream flooding closed Braddock Road between Backlick Road and Heming Avenue, along with part of Backlick Road in Springfield.
Fairfax County adopted a flood policy on October 14, 2025 that calls managing flood risk a shared responsibility among the County, residents and businesses. One practical piece of that is the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program, which the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District says reimburses 50 percent of eligible costs, up to $5,000.
Plenty of water damage has nothing to do with a creek. It is a pipe, a water heater or an appliance in a house that is 60 years old. Whatever the source, the sooner it is dried, the better!
Who Do I Call for a Sewer Backup in Springfield?
Fairfax County lists 703-323-1211, its 24-hour Trouble Response Center, for sewer emergencies. For a water main break, Fairfax Water's emergency line is 703-698-5613. Then call us.

Water Damage Restoration Questions, Answered
How Fast Does This Need to Happen?
Quickly. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Will Insurance Cover It?
Coverage depends on your policy and what caused the damage. We can bill your insurance company directly and help you understand the process.
Should I Call My Insurance Company or You First?
Call us to stop further damage, and call your insurance company to open a claim. Doing both early helps.
Can We Stay in the House?
Usually, yes. We'll talk through what makes sense based on where the water went.
Will You Have to Tear Out Walls or Floors?
Only what can't be dried or saved. We'll explain what needs to go and why before anything is removed.
How Will I Know It's Really Dry?
Dry to the touch isn't the same as dry inside the structure. We confirm the structure itself is dry — not just the surface — before anything is closed up, and we keep you informed along the way.
