Water Damage in Falls Church: What July 2019 Taught the City
On the morning of July 8, 2019, the City of Falls Church declared a local emergency after heavy rain in a short time caused flash flooding. Patch reported that a weather spotter measured 3.35 inches in Falls Church.
Afterward, the City Manager put the limit plainly in the Falls Church News-Press: rainfall intensity exceeding 1 inch per 20 minutes will cause flooding in the City. He also noted that most of the storm drains were installed between 1940 and 1970.
The work since then has been steady. In 2020 the News-Press reported six priority stormwater projects, part of a $17 million list. In 2025 it reported that the Lincoln Avenue project would be built in phases starting in 2026. Just outside the City, Fairfax County says nine homes along Tripps Run at Barrett Road were acquired and demolished in 2026 to reduce flooding.
None of that helps much on the day your own basement is wet. Whether the water came from a storm, a supply line or a water heater, the EPA advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. That is why we say call first!

Water Damage Restoration Questions, Answered
How Fast Does This Need to Happen?
Quickly. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Will Insurance Cover It?
Coverage depends on your policy and what caused the damage. We can bill your insurance company directly and help you understand the process.
Should I Call My Insurance Company or You First?
Call us to stop further damage, and call your insurance company to open a claim. Doing both early helps.
Can We Stay in the House?
Usually, yes. We'll talk through what makes sense based on where the water went.
Will You Have to Tear Out Walls or Floors?
Only what can't be dried or saved. We'll explain what needs to go and why before anything is removed.
How Will I Know It's Really Dry?
Dry to the touch isn't the same as dry inside the structure. We confirm the structure itself is dry — not just the surface — before anything is closed up, and we keep you informed along the way.
