Water Damage in Fairfax: Where the Water Comes From
The City of Fairfax sits at the headwaters of Accotink Creek, and the City itself says many of its streams are not able to handle existing storm flows. About 287 acres, roughly 7 percent of the City's land, lie within the 100-year floodplain, an area the City says contains 890 parcels and 197 structures.
FEMA records cited by the City show 46 flood insurance claims since 2000, the majority of them from Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011. The City Council adopted a flood resiliency plan on May 28, 2024.
Storms are only part of the story. Water damage also starts inside the home: a supply line, a water heater, a washing machine hose, or a pipe that freezes in January. For cold snaps, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue advises shutting off water to unheated areas of the home and to outdoor faucets.
Whatever the source, time matters with water. The EPA advises drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. Getting a home dry quickly helps keep a water problem from becoming a mold problem!

Water Damage Restoration Questions, Answered
How Fast Does This Need to Happen?
Quickly. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth.
Will Insurance Cover It?
Coverage depends on your policy and what caused the damage. We can bill your insurance company directly and help you understand the process.
Should I Call My Insurance Company or You First?
Call us to stop further damage, and call your insurance company to open a claim. Doing both early helps.
Can We Stay in the House?
Usually, yes. We'll talk through what makes sense based on where the water went.
Will You Have to Tear Out Walls or Floors?
Only what can't be dried or saved. We'll explain what needs to go and why before anything is removed.
How Will I Know It's Really Dry?
Dry to the touch isn't the same as dry inside the structure. We confirm the structure itself is dry — not just the surface — before anything is closed up, and we keep you informed along the way.
