Water Damage in Alexandria: River, Rain and Old Pipes

Alexandria gets water from three directions. The first is the river. A 2022 City engineering memo found that the Potomac at Old Town passes its lowest flooding threshold about 112 days a year, nearly one-third of the year on average.

The second is rain. The City says the storm of July 8, 2019 dropped up to four inches in an hour, and that the storm of July 23, 2020 dropped 2 to 3 inches in 30 minutes. In 2021 the City launched Flood Action Alexandria, which an advisory committee later described as a ten-year, $260 million investment in stormwater infrastructure.

The third is the pipes. The City's sewer page says the combined sewer area in Old Town dates back to the 1800s and covers about 540 acres. Homeowners can get help with prevention: the City's Flood Mitigation Grant matches 50 percent of eligible costs, up to $5,000 for a private property.

When water does get in, the City has said plainly that cleanup of sewage backups in homes is the responsibility of the property owner. Whatever the source, call us and tell us what happened. The sooner it's handled, the better!

Who Do I Report a Sewer Problem to in Alexandria?

The City asks residents to report sanitary sewer issues by calling 311 or 703.746.4311. Then call us and tell us what happened.

Is the Estimate Free?

Yes! Water damage estimates are free!

My Basement Floods a Little Every Big Storm. Is That a Problem?

Your Questions

Water Damage Restoration Questions, Answered

How Fast Does This Need to Happen?

Quickly. The EPA recommends drying water-damaged areas within 24–48 hours to prevent mold growth.

Will Insurance Cover It?

Coverage depends on your policy and what caused the damage. We can bill your insurance company directly and help you understand the process.

Should I Call My Insurance Company or You First?

Call us to stop further damage, and call your insurance company to open a claim. Doing both early helps.

Can We Stay in the House?

Usually, yes. We'll talk through what makes sense based on where the water went.

Will You Have to Tear Out Walls or Floors?

Only what can't be dried or saved. We'll explain what needs to go and why before anything is removed.

How Will I Know It's Really Dry?

Dry to the touch isn't the same as dry inside the structure. We confirm the structure itself is dry — not just the surface — before anything is closed up, and we keep you informed along the way.
