Attic Mold in Arlington: Slate, Shingles and Shared Roofs

Arlington's roofs tell you when a neighborhood was built. The National Register nomination for Arlington Forest notes that its houses are roofed in asphalt shingles. In Fairlington, built from 1942 to 1944, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources notes that most roofs are slate.

Fairlington is also a good example of a shared roof. Its 3,439 apartments were sold as condominiums in the 1970s, so the roof over your attic may belong to the association while the staining you found is over your own ceiling. It helps to let the association know early.

Trees matter as well. Arlington County reported tree coverage of 35.2 percent in 2023, with a goal of 40 percent. A shaded roof dries slowly, and gutters under mature trees need more attention.

The likely sources of attic mold tend to be familiar: a roof leak, a bathroom fan that ends in the attic instead of outdoors, or an attic that does not breathe well. There is often more than one. You get a careful plan and a clear price before work starts!

What Does Attic Mold Removal Cost in Arlington?

It depends on how much of the attic is affected and how easy it is to work in. For mold you can see, the estimate is free!

My Attic Is Part of a Condo Building. Can You Still Help?

Your Questions

Attic Mold Remediation Questions, Answered

Is Attic Mold a Problem If I Never Go Up There?

The attic isn't sealed off from the rest of your home — air and moisture move between them, and mold can quietly damage the wood structure over time. You don't have to go up there for it to matter.

How Much Will This Cost?

It depends on how much of the attic is affected. For mold you can see, the estimate is free, and you'll know the price before work starts.

What Causes Attic Mold?

Usually trapped moisture — for example, bathroom fans that vent into the attic instead of outside, which the U.S. Department of Energy notes can cause mold growth.

Will Insurance Cover It?

Coverage depends on your policy and the cause. We'll help you understand your options.

Does Attic Mold Matter If Nobody Goes Up There?

Yes. The attic shares air with the rest of the house through the ceiling, the attic hatch and the ductwork, and the moisture that fed the growth usually points to a roof, ventilation or bathroom-exhaust issue that will keep working on the house. Dealing with it on your schedule is easier than dealing with it after the next leak.

Will It Come Back?

Mold needs moisture to grow. We'll point out the likely moisture sources — there's often more than one — so you can decide what's right for your home.

Is Staining Always Mold?

No. Some dark staining is old water marking. Send a photo and we will tell you what we see.

Will Attic Mold Come Back?

Mold needs moisture. The estimate points out the likely moisture sources, often more than one.

Can I Send Photos Instead of Scheduling?

Yes! Show us your mold by photo or video.
