Questions People Ask

How Do I Keep Mold from Coming Back?

Mold comes back for one reason: water came back. Keeping a home dry is the whole prevention plan. Fix the plumbing, roof, grading or condensation issue that fed the first growth, keep indoor humidity under about 55 percent, run bathroom and kitchen exhaust, and dry any new leak within 48 hours. The second half is dust: if the fine dust from the old growth was never cleaned, the home can keep testing poorly even with no new growth.

Because there are usually two or three likely sources, not one, a mold or water damage inspection after a remediation is worth the $195. It confirms the home is dry and the plan held.

What Should I Do First If I Find Mold in My Home?

Protect the people first, then the belongings, then make the call. Keep children, anyone with health concerns and pets out of the affected room. Do not scrub, spray or tear anything out, because disturbing a colony sends its fine dust through the rest of the house. If the mold came with water, stop the water if you safely can. Then schedule a mold or water damage inspection before you spend money on anything else.

How Do I Find a Good Mold Inspector in Northern Virginia or Maryland?

Look for three things: experience with water damage, not just mold; a written report with the inspection; and a company that will tell you when you do not need them. Mold is the symptom. Water is the problem. An inspector who has spent years in water-damaged homes knows where moisture goes and where mold hides, which is the whole job.

What Does a Mold Inspection Include?

A proper mold or water damage inspection covers the whole conditioned home, not just the room with the stain. It looks at the areas you are concerned about, the places homes commonly fail (bathrooms, kitchens, basements, around windows and mechanical systems), and any history of leaks or flooding. You get a plain explanation of what was found, what it likely means, and what, if anything, should happen next.
